Thoroughly enjoyed this format - actually would love if you did an AMA also this whole thing was funny. Also “Later after dinner I had the classical Mediterranean moment of setting a time to meet my friend, and people coming basically 1h later at best.” TIL I’m Mediterranean
The suffering of Deutsche Bahn might be getting better soon, the new lady in charge is doing revolutionary things like "actually telling the public how bad it is" and "firing half the execs from the bloated corporate structure" and she actually acquired a locomotive driver's license which is a pretty cool PR stunt. There's still decades of maintenance backlog and such but she might be able to fix it.
You wrote a very good travelogue and for purely selfish reasons I think traveling more would be great to counteract the dead city situation. Next time start in Innsbruck and just go north for a few weeks.
I hope so, because the DB situation is really tragi-comical.
Thanks for the comment, my problem is I don't like traveling if it is not to stay 3 months in a country and discover the local culture so the only other 2 motivations is: the misses wants to see something or I want to meet people I know and haven' seen.
I was going to bring up Deutsche Bahn, but our own MÁV sometimes achieves punctual departures by having the previous train on the line not depart at all.
But my favorite guy in the government, the infrastructure minister, is a gay, autistic "I like trains" kid. He had model railways at home and was analyzing timetables as a child, so he's a severe case. He's already did a great job with Budapesf. He was also put in charge of distributing the EU funds, so by the time you get here, you might find a public transport paradise.
Unfortunately, the tourist crowds in Budapest inner city are about the same as in Prague, but if you don't mind a bit of hiking, Normafa is mandatory (tourists barely know about it), and around Budapest you should definitely visit Szentendre and Gödöllő. You can get to both easily by metro and suburban rail (HÉV). Then again, I'll probably tell you all this again if the trip ever becomes a reality.
Funny enough, even in Szentendre, it struck me that there's now an Indian restaurant right on the Danube promenade. If you end up there, just go to one of the Serbian places instead.
Back when I lived in a private dorm above downtown Budapest, I used to laugh because not far from where I lived there were restaurants called Shiraz, Baghdad, Aleppo, Kirkuk, and Tbilisi all next to each other, and one street over there was Baalbek. Who would even bother going to the Middle East after that?
Also, if you've already been to Tbilisi, you've technically been beyond the Iron Curtain anyway. (Okay, at this point I'm just being difficult.)
Now, on to the more important topics.
I understand why you wanted to leave Substack. Sometimes I find it overwhelming too, and I do actually have a social life outside of it. There was a period before when I was pretty active there, then I disappeared completely. I even got an email from Substack saying I was a power user and asking for feedback. I ignored it because I thought it was spam, but it was real.
Lately it's been pretty chill, though. Pikachud is to blame. He's constantly posting his nonsense and it's hard to keep up with that. (Damn you, you yellow rat.)
If you don't drown yourself in the slop, I still think it's one of the better places to indulge your sperg tendencies without driving your friends, or girlfriend if you have one, completely insane. (ENTP as the girls here call it in my case.)
I've too written a lot for myself over the past few years and maybe one day I'll get around to sharing it. Or maybe I'll leave it to someone else to publish after I'm gone, and they'll either make a fortune from it or people will laugh at how much of an idiot I was.
Honestly, from where I'm standing, you seem to be doing pretty well mentally. Sure, it's a problem that countryside social life has died across much of Europe, but if the willingness to act is there, the rest tends to follow. Élan vital, as I like to call it.
Don't listen to Drunk Wisconsin when he tells you to be normal. You'll need that extra oomph to get where you want to go, and we're already past the stage of meeting someone at university anyway. (To be fair, those of us in electrical engineering or computer engineering weren't exactly dealt good cards in that aspect.) In the end you gotta do shit proactively.
Then again, you've basically written all of this yourself already, so I'll stop before I talk myself into an essay.
You have luck in having a trains autist guy as a minister, W.
Thank you for all the recommendations will save them into a note for future travels.
As for Tbilissi, yes technically yes but it was the Soviet Union so a bit different.
Yeah, I avoided Twitter so never got sucked by that but I have been one-shotted by Substack as it is catnip for me.
As a fellow ENFP or ENTP I dont remember which I intent in continuing this to not make someone suffer the sperging.
As for Drunk Wisconsin I disagree with his take but it is because I know I can’t be normal and people like me for being me so I will not change, I will probably lean on just being more of myself until a damsel just falls all over.
The mental health part fluctuates and this Winter was the classical SAD battle which I hope I get rid of next year. Every new year I try things and the only thing that helps is a strong regime of sports and habits. In general yeah I am far from suicide because I find it the most retarded way to go out. Much bettet to go as a warlord.
It was probably not the healthiest cope, but during some rough periods my attitude was: "Never. Suicide is too gay. If I have to die it has to be glorious."
That did lead to some pretty stupid situations. Like the time I almost joined the Ukrainians, since according to the Ukrainians, Rusyns are Ukrainians too. Then I realized I don't even like the Ukros.
Oh... that just gave me an idea you might be able to work into your posts about Islamism.
I've run into it multiple times that engineers are overrepresented among Islamists. Even that guy behind the Tunisian massacre years ago was an electrical engineer.
We've already more or less established that there's a certain personality type that's susceptible to these kind of things, but I wonder if there's a connection here too. (I'm partly extrapolating from myself.)
I think the explanation is you have to be beyond a certain IQ to delude yourself into certain ideologies which is why many smart intellectuals falls for retarded ideas that the common man understands as stupid (collectivization for example).
But that is an interesting point I add it.
For me there is my mom, who already lost a son to illness and whom I don’t want to hurt so I will never cross the threshold
Re: engineers, One of my professors has a theory that engineering/STEM students are more likely to be 1st-Gen students, and thus disproportionately from rural/poorer backgrounds where religion is more valued
Now that I think about it, back in university we were either absolute first-generation or the first engineer in the family. My own family, for example, is full of people with university degrees, but none of them are engineers. Well... there are a few agricultural engineers, but for some reason I tend to think of that as a separate category. Quite a few of us had parents who were teachers.
>Don't listen to Drunk Wisconsin when he tells you to be normal.
Could not agree more. Being normal is great if you're normal but if you're a weird little fuck (affectionately) you need to somewhat lean into your madness to make it.
Yeah, I know I often sound like I've got a grudge against him. (To be fair, yes...I do.) But I like the guy.
It's just that something inside me immediately wants to go, "No, I refuse to be normal!" and then I proceed to post the most milquetoast take imaginable.
But trust me, self-sabotage is still one of my favorite hobbies. At least I'm never bored.
An underlying thing Elliot Friedland glossed over is that you need a job description for a wife. What do you want a girlfriend/wife to do for you? How can she fix you?
Ex: in my case, my girlfriend keeps up with my insane interests (peak) but is also an accurate judge of my character. She tells me when I’m being overly rigid in my thinking, and motivates me to get more ambitious in my life.
You might not need what I need, but you need more of a woman than great tits. That’s still important (I’m no different), but great tits are common, and the soul behind those tits is what differentiates a wife from any other baddie.
Also chicks dig clout and proof of your soul, keep poasting
Thank you for the comment, I think I will be serious and open up a bit about this, I already have a sort of list like this that filters in/out women based on purely personality based traits.
One of the ones near the top is ability to openly communicate knowing that I am not her enemy and that I am good man, just a stupid one. This does not come on writing but one of the bad traits is that I was born with a strong filtering system but incredibly bad filters which creates a lot of comical moments and sometimes leads me to say things that other people might find hurtful, without me realizing it. It has gotten better over the past few years but I still regularly fuck up and unknowingly trigger the insecurities of women around me which leads to understandable anger.
I have regularly explained the situation and front it, because that this is something that WILL happen. I am retarded and no matter how careful I actually try to I end up through cosmic talent saying something too far. The good women understand me and then just turn it into a private joke, but yeah. Communication is #0, #1 and #2 for me.
> is also an accurate judge of my character. She tells me when I’m being overly rigid in my thinking, and motivates me to get more ambitious in my life.
This is actually top tier, I will yoink it. But I think good traits cluster together so a woman who understands you, can also bust your balls and not tolerate your bullshit (something good).
Indeed great tits and a good body can be worked on, but personality traits are usually fixed by adult age (and probably some genetics).
There are recent migrants who don't respect rules and many lumpens who have no future and thus engage in criminal behaviours in Spain. I heard in Italy the situation is less bad
Tbf about 15 years ago in Barcelona I was sitting in a bar and watched one pack of Moraks run past quickly followed by another group that was chasing them and one of the latter was armed with a small SWORD. I have yet to see that in Italy
With your Gitlab CI/CD pipelines are you using the catalog features and then doing tests on minimal versions? I got a setup where the pipeline project runs minimal similar spec’d pipelines targeted on mini-projects that I make as complex as I need. Any changes have to pass.
The issue is that I have to generate windows, apks and docker builds for different projects, and the gitlab VM is not connected to internet because of security reasons, so all self-hosted.
As for the catalog, I actually made a git repo with custom components and workflows which all the gitlan-ci.ym redirect so, so I just need to change the branch for tests and work on some specidic “test/ci-0426“ type of branch.
I was saying in the test projects, you make CI/CD that runs your pipelines against minimal versions of a project to get a pass-fail with the spec. My own Catalog looks like this. The Gitlab CI of the main project runs the local install-requirements.yml which instantiates against the sample. In here, for a Python project, I can just test it successfully installs. Then it becomes easy to copy over to other projects.
Also fully, offline Gitlab is pretty complicated. You rely a lot on a good set of images from an image registry.
Yeah cost, ratio of meeting people and events, and interesting things for you overall. I contrast it as cities where it is nice to go as a group or with a romantic partner.
A weird thing about Substack is meeting better people with worse lives.

I laughed at the part about punctual trains.

There's definitely something to that.
Now that I think about it, back in university we were either absolute first-generation or the first engineer in the family. Well... there are a few agricultural engineers, but for some reason I tend to think of that as a separate category. Quite a few of us had parents who were teachers.
I never really came across engineering dynasties.
I am the first engineer in my family. Also first master level degree with my father being the first university student
Who would want to inflict engineering classes on their children? My own father is a lawyer and he told me not to study law bc it was so miserable

1. Slovenia is FULL of Bosnians. It’s just all the weirdos stay in Bosnia because they think that their presence is some kind of fuck you to the Serbs
2. Kurds are everywhere precisely because they don’t have a homeland to be in
How do you define a solo friendly city? Is it just basis cost or any other characteristics?
(Asking for myself. Spending July in Europe)
Thanks for sharing!
Yeah cost, ratio of meeting people and events, and interesting things for you overall. I contrast it as cities where it is nice to go as a group or with a romantic partner.
